Whoosh

Sirius B doesn’t outshine a black dwarf…
these visible spectrums.
—Jig3125
Sirius B already has a reputation.
The star that sits beside Sirius
without needing to steal the show.
A black dwarf???
That’s another kind of quiet.
Just darkness.
Which makes the phrase outshine
a little complicated.
How do you outshine something???
That’s where whoosh comes in.
Light passes through the spectrum—
whoosh.
Red.
Orange.
Yellow.
Green.
Blue.
Violet.
All those colors,
each carrying its own little piece of information.
And somewhere beyond what the eye can see,
there’s plenty more going on.
The visible spectrum is only a slice.
A thin little window
in a much bigger electromagnetic world.
So Sirius B can sit there,
bright enough to be noticed,
while a hypothetical black dwarf
keeps its light to itself.
No competition.
Just perspective.
Because sometimes the thing that appears brightest
isn’t necessarily the thing with the most going on.
And darkness…
It doesn’t have to prove anything.
