Cartoons have an interesting history.

Before they were decorating lunch boxes and cereal aisles, they were busy doing other things.

Somewhere along the way, people looked at moving drawings and reached a conclusion:

“Ah yes. This must be for children.”

A remarkable assumption.

Nobody looks at a painting and says,

“Clearly intended for eight-year-olds.”

Yet cartoons somehow ended up with the reputation.

Funny…

Animation never seemed particularly concerned.

It kept evolving.

Comedy.

Drama.

Action.

Fantasy.

Documentaries.

Art.

A drawing can go anywhere imagination allows.

That’s a large neighborhood.

Animation isn’t a genre.

It’s a language.

A way of telling stories.

Sometimes for children.

Sometimes for adults.

Sometimes for anyone willing to look.

The medium keeps moving while the assumptions struggle to keep up.

Not bad for a bunch of pictures pretending to stand still.

Cartoons were not made for kids.
