La Venta

Indians aren’t Indian… Wait—which ones?

“Indian” can point one way on a map and another way in a history book.

Then “La Venta” walks into the conversation and suddenly we’re somewhere else entirely.

La Venta.

Sounds like a sale.

Sounds like a place.

Sounds like somebody is about to say, “Everything must go.”

But La Venta is also a place where history left fingerprints—long before somebody started putting labels on everybody else.

So here we are, trying to sort out the names.

Indian.

Indio.

Indigenous.

American.

Mexican.

Which one?

Depends on where you’re standing.

A label can tell you where somebody thinks you are without telling you where you actually came from…

Like a price tag stuck on the wrong shelf.

You can call it a sale.

You can call it La Venta.

But before you buy the story, maybe check the label.

Because sometimes the thing being sold isn’t the object.
