Some places look good before you even know what they’re for.

Gotham Hall has that kind of presence.

Beautiful architecture.

Big rooms.

A little history hanging around in the walls.

Easy on the eyes.

Then comes the crowd.

Tough crowd…

Funny how a beautiful setting doesn’t guarantee an easy conversation.

People bring opinions with them.

Expectations too.

Everybody has a reason for being there.

Everybody has a version of the story.

Somewhere between the polished surroundings and the people filling them, there’s usually a question nobody can quite put their finger on.

Why?

Why this?

Why here?

Why now?

The answer isn’t always on display.

Sometimes it’s boxed in.

Protected.

Packaged.

Presented in a way that makes you wonder whether you’re supposed to understand it or simply appreciate the presentation.

That’s what culture does.

It gives us things to look at…

and things to question.

Art.

Music.

Fashion.

Language.

Tradition.

The stuff we inherit.

The stuff we reinvent.

The stuff we argue about while standing in beautiful rooms.

The “why” doesn’t need to be obvious.

The question is part of the experience.

You walk in looking at the architecture.

You walk out thinking about the people.

The people become the culture.

The culture becomes the conversation.

The conversation keeps going long after the lights go down.

Gotham Hall.

Easy on the eyes.

Tough crowd.

The why?

Still boxed in.

Maybe that’s exactly where it belongs.
